Blind Beach, Jenner, CA
After a rainy MLK weekend, my photo trip was redeemed with a brilliant sunrise over Blind Beach near Jenner, CA. This image required blending two exposures: one for the bright sunrise clouds and sky and another for the dark hillsides and the beach in the shadows.Dolphin Sunset
MacKerricher State Park, Mendocino, CA
As a brilliant sunset enfolded before me, I noticed this peculiar looking tidepool that - at the right angle - looked like a dolphin. Setting my tripod so the sunset light reflected in my new dolphin friend, I snapped this shot with a 3-stop graduated neutral density filter to balance the bright sky against the dark foreground.CaliforniaCoastMendocinoMacKerricher State ParkNatureNorthern CaliforniaSunset
Towering Fragility
Methow Valley, WA
Shooting at a lake below I noticed this brilliant stand of Aspen. I had to bushwack up a fairly steep mountain to get a good angle, but the effort was well worth it.LandscapesMethow ValleyNatureWashington

Pacifica Rock Maze
Mori Point, Pacifica, CA
On a spring shot of the wildflowers I noticed this rock maze on the bluffs near Mori Point in Pacifica. It was the perfect foreground for the glory of the sunset that shortly unfolded, with the famous San Pedro Point along the horizon.BlendCaliforniaCoastLandscapesMori PointNaturePacificaSpringSunset
Autumn Splendor
North Lake Tahoe, CA
The forests north of Lake Tahoe turn wonderful shades of green, yellow, and orange as the setting sun streams through the aspens. I framed the aspens and all other elements to draw the eye towards the sun shining in the background.AutumnCaliforniaFall ColorsLake TahoeNatureSierra Nevadas

Biscuit Basin Sunrise
Yellowstone National Park, WY
When shooting the geologic wonders of Yellowstone the conditions are constantly changing as the steam becomes heavy and is then blown away from the morning wind. I very much enjoyed this relaxing shoot at sunrise walking among the otherworldly geology.ADB7987blendBiscuit BasinGreat Mega Western Photo TourJay Varina WorkshopLocations specificWorkshopsYellowstone National Park

Sandstone Surrealism
Salt Point State Park, Sonoma County, CA
I love shooting coastal images after the sun has set, using long exposures (~15-60 seconds) in the near-darkness to draw out all the beautiful light our eyes can barely see. This is an instance of such a technique, turning the ocean waves into cloud like blurs behind the surreal sandstone formations of Salt Point.BlendCaliforniaNatureSalt Point State ParkSandstoneSunsetLong Exposure
A Well Groomed Path
Château de Chenonceau, Loire Valley, France
This centuries old path in one of the most extravagant Chateau's in France's Loire Valley must have been traveled by countless royalty. You can see the tiny specks of people at the end of the path, representing the near-faded history of those famous travelers of yesterday.AutumnEuropeFranceTravelChâteau de ChenonceauLoire Valley

Lichen of Lake Abert
Lake Abert, OR
Driving along I-395, I stumbled upon Lake Abert, a lovely lake in the high desert featuring black rock beaches covered in bright orange lichens. I never saw another person as I shot the sunset light joyfully for hours.Great Mega Western Photo TourOregonNatureSunsetLake AbertLichen

Wild River
Hope Valley, CA
I noticed this shot walking along the river and then proceeded to contort myself and place my tripod precipitously atop a wet rock in the middle of the river. After a half hour or so of trying different compositions, I ended up with this keeper and a bit of a sore back.AutumnCaliforniaFall ColorsLake TahoeNatureSierra Nevadas

Devil's Slide Sunset
Pacifica, CA
The town I live in, Pacifica, CA, is typically socked in by fog every summer day. However, the winters bring clear air and wonderful light as storm systems move in from the Pacific. This shot was taken on the "Devil's Slide", an old section of Highway 1 converted into a hiking trail.BlendCaliforniaCoastLandscapesNatureNorthern CaliforniaPacificaSunsetDevil's Slide
Wildflower Sunset
Mori Point, Pacifica, CA
Wildflowers abound on the bluffs near Pacifica's Mori Point in a springtime sunset. This year featured an especially great rainfall in Northern California, which led to a wonderful display of coastal wildflowers.CaliforniaCoastNaturePacificaSpringSunsetWildflowersMori Point

Trinidad at Dusk
Trinidad, CA
In Humboldt County, in the northwestern corner of California, lies a sleepy little town called Trinidad. It's known for its seastacks and harbor, but the view is pretty good looking back at town at dusk, as the lights turn on and the fireplaces spark up on a cold winter night.CaliforniaCoastHumboldtNatureNorthern CaliforniaWinterTrinidad

Desert Bounty

After a decent rainy season, from the barren desert floor of Joshua Tree National Park often emerges a colorful blanket of wildflowers, including the blooming of the cactus plants. Neon Tidepool Life
MacKerricher State Park, Mendocino Coast, CA
The tideepools at MacKerricher State Park are full of life: sea anemones (like this one), sun stars, sea slugs, and even octopus. However, it takes quite the hunter to find a beautiful and large open anemone like this one.Coastal Lucidity
